Born
in a musical family, Ching-ju Shih began violin lesson with her
father at the age of four, and started her piano training when
she was seven years old. Ms. Shih won several prizes in both piano
and composition competitions during her early years of musical
training including five times first prize winner in piano competition
and two times first prize winner of composition competition of
Kaohsiung City in Taiwan.
Ms. Shih holds a Bachelor degree with honors in composition from
National Taiwan Normal University and a Master of Music degree
in piano performance from Boston University. She was a faculty
of the special music program for talented young musicians at Kwan-Jen
Elementary School in Taiwan from 1990-1992; in 1991 Ms. Shih won
the ICRT Young Artist Scholarship. While studying at Boston University,
Ms. Shih served as a teaching assistant in the undergraduate division,
and was a pianist as well as a composer in the contemporary music
ensemble directed by Theodore Antoniou. Upon graduating, Ms. Shih
remained at Boston University as a candidate for the Doctorate
of Musical Arts program, studying composition under Theodore Antoniou.
In 1992, Ms. Shih was commissioned by Taiwan Chamber String Orchestra
to arrange a suite of Taiwanese folksongs, which was premiered
at National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. The following year
she received the Golden-Ding Award for the best music arrangement
from the R.O.C. government and was invited to the President Hall
for an honoring ceremony. Ms. Shih was elected an honor member
of the Society of Pi Kappa Lambda in 1996 for her outstanding
performance in academic study as well as her musical career. Since
1996, Ms. Shih has been a Doctorate of Musical Art candidate at
the Graduate School and University Center, City University of
New York, studying with celebrated composers David Del Tredici
and David Olan. Ms. Shih is also active as a pianist, playing
a wide range of repertoire in accompaniment and chamber music
in New York City and San Francisco, Bay Area. Her music in widely
performed in Boston, New York, Taiwan, Singapore and Bay Area,
ranging from solo instrument, chamber ensemble to large orchestra.
